In April of 2002 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced their approval of Botox for cosmetic use.Their findings and clinical studies show that the drug is safe and effective for wrinkle reduction. Botulinum toxin, or "Botox," has been an exciting advance in cosmetic treatment. Botox has been used by ophthalmologists for many years. Recently, the use of Botox has expanded due to its dramatic improvement in facial expression lines. It is known that many wrinkles are due to contraction of the muscles under the skin. Relaxation of those same muscles softens the wrinkle and can actually cause it to disappear. Areas which respond best to Botox are glabellar furrows (the wrinkles between the eyebrows and above the nose), forehead wrinkles, and crow's feet.
